“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.” (Psalm 90:1)
Formation (Humble beginnings)
St. John’s Church, Bangalore is the third oldest Protestant Church in Bangalore City. Rev. R. Posnett, an Anglican Minister who was stationed as the Assistant Chaplain at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Bangalore, started the Church in 1853.
His vision was to start a parish near the then ‘Mootoocherry’ area (present day Ulsoor, which was renamed as St John's hill). This resulted in the establishment of the Church and School for the Garrison soldiers, pensioners and the Anglo-Indian Community. In 1853, a small room was built. This room served as a chapel-cum-schoolroom. St. John’s High School was officially founded in 1854.
Encouraged with the success of the school-library-chapel, Rev. Posnett felt that there needed to be a separate premises for the church and school. On April 23rd 1853, he wrote to the Bishop of Madras seeking help in purchasing land for further extension. With the voluntary contributions of the officers and the congregation, additional land was purchased.
